We know what we can’t trust big businesses to have our best interest at heart. Jane Alexander’s A User’s Guide to Make-Believe and V. Anne Smith’s A Code for Carolyn blur the boundaries of reality and fantasy in a not so distant society akin to the ones shown in Black Mirror.  Are you ready?

About the speakers

Jane Alexander has completed a PhD in creative writing and teaches at the University of Edinburgh and the Open University.  She also runs creative writing workshops for people in recovery from substance abuse. Her first novel was The Last Treasure Hunt. Jane lives in Edinburgh.

Dr V. Anne Smith is on the biology faculty at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. She researches computational biology, concentrating on complex biological networks. She develops algorithms to infer functional interactions based upon observational data, generating biological discovery in areas as diverse as ecosystems and gene regulation. In addition to doing research, she enjoys writing fiction.
