Secrets and Lies with Freya Marske & Garth Nix

  • Pleasance 60 Pleasance Edinburgh, Scotland, EH8 9TQ United Kingdom (map)

Can you keep a secret?

A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske, the first book in the Last Binding trilogy, is a queer historical fantasy set in an Edwardian England full of magic, contracts and conspiracies. Robin Blyth has more than enough bother in his life. When an administrative mistake sees him named the civil service liaison to a hidden magical society, he must contend with the beauty and danger of magic, an excruciating deadly curse, and the alarming visions of the future that come with it—not to mention Edwin Courcey, his cold and prickly counterpart in the magical bureaucracy. Thrown together and facing unexpected dangers, Robin and Edwin discover a plot that threatens every magician in the British Isles—and a secret that more than one person has already died to keep.

In a slightly alternate London in 1983, the setting for The Left-handed Booksllers of London by Garth Nix, Susan Arkshaw is looking for her father, a man she has never met. Crime boss Frank Thringley might be able to help her, but Susan doesn't get time to ask Frank any questions before he is turned to dust by the prick of a silver hatpin in the hands of the outrageously attractive Merlin. Merlin is a young left-handed bookseller (one of the fighting ones), who with the right-handed booksellers (the intellectual ones), are an extended family of magical beings who police the mythic and legendary Old World when it intrudes on the modern world, in addition to running several bookshops. When Susan’s search and Merlin’s quest strangely overlap, can they discover the truth of Susan’s paternity before the Old World erupts dangerously into the New?
